Default format is PNG, change it to any of the following:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type JPG

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type TIFF

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type GIF

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type PDF

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type PNG
